What is Juvenile Diabetes?Diabetes is when the body has trouble regulating its glucose (blood sugar) levels. Juvenile Diabetes, also known as Type 1 diabetes, occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys certain cells in the pancreas. These cells normally produce insulin, but when they are destroyed, insulin is not produced and the glucose stays in the blood where is can cause damage to the organ systems in the body.
People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin in order to stay alive. Their daily lives consist of multiple injections or having insulin delivered through an insulin pump, and testing their blood sugar by pricking their fingers for blood several times a day.
People with diabetes must also be careful to have a balanced diet and exercise program to regulate their blood sugar levels. If not managed properly, the results can be life threatening.
