Contrast Dye, Gadolinium, Can Cause Serious Health Risks

Gadolinium is a chemical used to help doctors differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue in the body when used with an MRI or CT scans.

The FDA has warned patients and physicians about a potential side effect of gadolinium called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis ("NSF"). NSF is a debilitating and potentially fatal disease with no cure. NSF can develop within days after a single injection of a gadolinium-based contrast agent, or it can take up to 18 months to become apparent.

Some side effects noticed early on are mild to moderate headaches, nausea and dizziness. The most visible symptom is a hardening of the skin, usually on the lower legs at first, then on the arms with the possibility to appear on other areas of the body.

To date, NSF has only been found in patients with long-standing and severe kidney disease.
