Methadone

The FDA announced on November 29, 2006, that patients taking methadone may be at risk of developing life-threatening breathing difficulties and heart irregularities.

The FDA urges patients taking methadone to follow the dose exactly as it is prescribed and to not take any additional medication or supplements without first consulting your doctor. They further advise doctors to prescribe methadone only to patients with moderate to severe pain and only when other medication has not worked.

A dose of methadone relieves pain for approximately 4-8 hours, however, it stays in the body anywhere from 8 to 60 hours. As a result, a patient may need pain relief before the drug has left the body, which may result in a toxic build up of methadone.
