Prempro/HRT
Prempro Attorney New York
Prempro is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) drug used to treat the symptoms of menopause in women. An extensive study of Prempro was stopped in July 2002 after the drug was found to pose serious health risks include stroke, heart attack, and breast cancer.
Although there has been debate over the potential health effects of HRT for some time, many women have depended on medications such as Prempro to help deal with symptoms of menopause. While Prempro did prove to guard against hip fractures and colorectal cancer, it was found that the risks far outweighed the benefits.
According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), women who were given Prempro were more likely to develop serious problems compared to those in the placebo group.
- 26% increase in breast cancer
- 41% increase in strokes
- 100% increase in blood clots
- 22% increase in incidents of cardiovascular disease
Additional side effects associated with Prempro may include increased incidence of ovarian cancer, lupus and gall bladder cancer. A study released in May 2003 by the American Medical Association (AMA) also noted increased risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
