Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella Birth Control Pills (Beyaz)

Yaz Update (May 21, 2010):  The FDA is informing the public about new information that is being assessed as part of FDA's ongoing safety review of birth control pills that contain drospirenone.  The review will further evaluate the risk of blood clots in women who use these products.

Drospirenone is a type of female sex hormone called a progestin. Several studies have reported that the risk of blood clots in women who use birth control pills containing drospirenone is higher than that for women who use pills containing progestin levonorgestrel.  Other studies have not found an increased risk.

The FDA is currently evaluating the conflicting results.

* FDA Approves New Drug - Beyaz tablets are an estrogen/progestin combined birth control pill. Beyaz is based on the approved product YAZ, which contains the same doses of estrogen and progestin.

Yaz is a prescription birth control pill manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals. As with other birth control pills, Yaz , Yasmin and Ocella  contain the hormones estrogen and progestin in order to prevent pregnancy. The progestin used in Yaz,  Yasmin, and Ocella  however, is dropsirenone, which has been linked to serious medical conditions  in medical studies.

Serious side effects found to be associated with  dropsirenone as contained in Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella birth control pills include:

  • heart attack,
  • stroke,
  • deep vein thrombosis,
  • pulmonary embolism,
  • blood clots,
  • abnormal heart rhythm,
  • gall bladder injury, and
  • death.

Due to the  potentially serious and  life-threatening dangers associated with Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella  side effects should be immediately evaluated by a doctor.

Currently neither the FDA nor the manufacturer has issued a Yaz recall and it remains one of the most popular birth control pills.

If you or a loved one has suffered  serious adverse side effects after taking Yaz, Yasmin, or Ocella, you should contact your doctor immediately.   We are also available to advise you of your rights.
