Cryptosporidium
You can become infected with Cryptosporidium by touching anything that has come in contact with contaminated feces.
People have contracted cryptosporidium in the following ways:
- Swallowing or putting something contaminated in your mouth
- Drinking contaminated water
- Swimming and ultimately swallowing contaminated water
- Eating uncooked contaminated food
- Touching a contaminated surface and then putting your fingers in your mouth
In most healthy people, a cryptosporidium infection produces an attack of watery diarrhea and the infection usually goes away within a week or two. However, if you have a weak immune system, without proper treatment, it can be life-threatening.
Additional signs and symptoms include the following and may last for up to two weeks, although they may come and go:
- Watery diarrhea
- Dehydration
- Weight loss
- Stomach cramps or pain
- Fever
- Nausea
- Vomiting
