Celebrex (celecoxib) is a member of the category of drugs called "Cox-2 Inhibitors." Celebrex is generally prescribed to provide pain relief for arthritis, menstrual cramps, osteoarthritis, adult rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation, and other types of serious pain.
Celebrex has been found to cause serious gastrointestinal disorders in some patients. In addition, a study sponsored by the drug's manufacturer found Celebrex may increase a patient's risk of suffering a heart attack, stroke, or blood clot. At least a dozen deaths have been linked to serious Celebrex side effects.
The FDA recently reviewed the findings of an FDA advisory committee. The committee unanimously voted that Celebrex and other Cox-2 inhibitors significantly increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. As of this date, however, the FDA has allowed Celebrex to remain on the market.
On April 7, 2005, the FDA required Pfizer to add a "black box" warning to the drug’s label to warn of the serious risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes. The "black box" warning is the strongest warning possible.
Due to the documented cardiovascular risks of using Celebrex, and the fact that this drug has not been proven to be more effective than other, less dangerous drugs, patients prescribed this drug may be at unnecessary increased risk of injury.
