Rochester, located in Monroe County, New York, boasts the second largest economy in the State of New York and it is also the third most populated city in the state after New York City and Buffalo.
Rochester was founded in 1803 by Col. Nathaniel Rochester, Maj. Charles Carroll and Col. Williams Fitzhugh, Jr. It became America's first "boomtown" after doubling its population in a ten year period.
By 1838, it acquired the name "The Flour City" when it became the largest flour producing city in the United States. It had around 20 flourmills producing 500,000 barrels of flour annually. By the mid-ninteenth century, the wheat-producing industry moved west leading to the fall of Rochester's flourmills. Consequently, a new and booming nursery industry replaced the city's previous flour industry, leading to Rochester's second nickname "The Flower City."
