Quinine was discovered as a miracle drug in the 19th century as a treatment for malaria. Since that time, companies have found other unapproved uses for the drug.
The FDA has ordered firms to stop marketing unapproved products containing Quinine, due to some serious health concerns.
The FDA notes there is only one quinine product (Qualaquin, made by Mutual Pharmaceutical Company, Inc) currently approved by the FDA. Some companies, however, have been marketing the drug to treat leg cramps. The FDA has determined the risks of using Quinine to treat leg cramps, far outweigh the benefits.
Quinine side effects include potential serious interactions with other drugs, abnormal heart beat, thrombocytopenia (a blood platelet disorder that can cause hemorrhage or clotting problems) and severe allergic reactions. All of these side effects are potentially fatal.
Since 1969, the FDA has received 665 reports of serious side effects, including 93 deaths, related to Quinine.
